In-Touch Science recognizes that a child's first teacher is the parent. Children often adopt the parents' attitude about science even before they enter kindergarten. Getting a child excited about science may mean getting a parent excited about science. Research shows that children are more confident learners when they are supported by parents. A parent does NOT have to be a scientist. A parent DOES have to encourage a child's explorations in science.

Note: The parental role may be played by an older sibling, a grandparent, a 4-H leader, foster parent, or other caring adult.

Other ways to connect with families include:

  • Ask the children to take home something they made in In-Touch Science
  • Ask parents for suggestions to improve the program

How can parents enhance their child's experience in In-Touch Science?
One parent invited her child's friends to tie-dye t-shirts with berries after the group did the activity Color or Not (Foods & Fabrics).
Other ways to help are:

  • Ask your child what happened at In-Touch Science
  • Offer to organize a fieldtrip
  • Be an advocate for science in your school and community
  • Donate, collect, organize, maintain, or store supplies
  • Invite other families to join
  • Provide transportation for your child and a friend
  • Increase the time you spend with your child doing hands-on activities
