Fun science is safe science. Watch for the CAUTION signs in the margins of In-Touch Science publications and for words in bold italics such as these entries in the Threads of Life (Fibers & Animals). Read the labels on all ingredients and practice using all equipment. Know the location of the phone, exits, first-aid kit, and fire extinguishers.

Give clear instructions and demonstrations for handling items such as the lighter for Name that Flame (Fibers & Animals), corer for Core Comparisons (Foods & Fabrics), and hammer for Lock It Up (Plants & Engineering).

Wear those goggles! Although goggles are a significant initial investment, they can be cleaned and reused. A variety of styles and sizes are available. "Safety Spectacles" are made of lightweight plastic and fit over eye glasses. Goggles are listed in the supply section of all In-Touch Science activities that require eye protection.

Check ahead with the children and parents for allergies. Many people are sensitive to nuts used in Threads of Life (Fibers & Animal) and Lock It Up (Plants & Engineering). Other common allergies are latex, wool, chocolate, borax, and detergent. Even children without known allergies should not taste, smell, or mix substances without being instructed to do so.

If you have more than 10 children in your group, enlist a second adult. This helper can pour hot water, clean up spills, and watch for accidents.

Reminder: Hand washing at the end of every activity is a good idea.
