The contents are divided into three sections. Please read "Introducing the Program," pages 3-14, before you use these activities with children. The 20-30 minutes reading is time well spent as this information sets the foundation for the entire program.

Scan Resources and Management, pages 99-115, so that you know where to go for forms, supply information, and other resources.

Sessions 1-5 are described in pages 15-98. All sessions are organized in the same way. We will explore one session in detail.

Session 4, Structure, has two activities. The plant science activity is Strong Stems and Broad Leaves. The engineering activity is Flat or Round. This page can be taken from the publication and laminated to serve as a mini-poster. Placed on the table during the activity, it reminds children and facilitators how the two fields of study are linked.

In addition to the poster and introduction, each activity has nine sections:

Leader's Guide - Explains what is expected of the children, gives hints for planning ahead, and advises on adaptations for special needs.

Science: Behind the Scenes - Provides background about the science concept and explains some of the most frequent results of the activity.

Supplies and Preparation - Lists materials and equipment.

Focus - Introduces the topic and allows the children to express what they already know.

Activity - Provides instructions and safety information for the activity.

"I wonder. . ." Statements - Reminds facilitators to listen to the children.

Conversation ‹ Suggests questions that can help direct the exploration.

Transition or Closure ‹ Recounts what was done and reviews the "I wonder. . ." statements. Activity A Transition helps bridge Activity A and Activity B. Activity B Closure gives a summary of the two activities and how they relate to the science concept.

A Step Beyond - Shares additional activities that extend or expand the experience.
